Fatigue can be marked, and respiratory strength may be reduced. Conservative pacing and regular review of practical ability are therefore important. A diver with cerebral palsy may need support with trim, propulsion, buoyancy control or holding a regulator comfortably. Speech may also be affected without intelligence being affected. In some cases, specialist equipment such as a full-face mask may help if mouth control is unreliable. Service ramps and back-of-house routes may sometimes offer workable access even when the main guest route does not. If the group includes a sight-impaired diver who uses a guide dog, this also needs to be confirmed in advance. Accessible diving does not begin at the water’s edge. It starts with the full journey through the environment, from transport and arrival to changing facilities, toilets, poolside or shoreline movement, water access and the return journey afterwards. A site may appear suitable at first glance, yet still create serious problems if the diver cannot reach the toilet, cannot move safely between levels or has nowhere appropriate to rest and recover after the dive.

On return to the boat, normal safety priorities still apply. Positive buoyancy must be established first. Depending on the boat and the diver’s ability, weights may be removed before the cylinder or full scuba unit. Mask and snorkel, or the regulator if appropriate, should remain in place until the diver is secure. A diver who can hold the sides of the boat with the arms may then be assisted aboard by able-bodied helpers pulling them upward in a controlled way.
